LAHAINA, Hawaiʻi (Island News) -- More than two years after the devastating wildfires tore through Lahaina, survivors are finally beginning to find stability with the opening of the first permanent affordable housing built since the disaster.

Hundreds of Lahaina fire survivors are now settling into Maui’s first affordable housing project since the 2023 fire disaster.

The grand opening and blessing of Kaiāulu o Kūku‘ia Thursday morning marked an emotional milestone in West Maui’s recovery, becoming the first newly built, permanent multifamily affordable housing project to open for local families since the August 2023 wildfires.

Residents moving into the complex say there's no feeling like finally having a home.

An estimated 200 affordable rentals are under construction in Lahaina as part of the Kaiāulu o Kūku′ia project, which includes Hawaiʻi’s very first Bezos Academy preschool.

Bezos Academy is partnering with Ikaika Ohana to open a tuition-free, Montessori-inspired preschool in Lahaina.

In collaboration with Urban Housing Communities, Ikaika ‘Ohana, and Hunt Capital Partners, CVS Health invested $17.5 million to help build 200 new affordable housing units at Kaiāulu o Kūku‘ia in Lahaina, Maui.

The developer of the 89-unit project is the first to obtain building permits in the burn zone. Now the county and state are being asked to pick up the cost of what insurance didn't cover.

Supported by housing tax credit equity from Hunt Capital Partners, the community will have a rent-to-own option.
